Each division has a collection of Samson Go Mics, which work well for picking up whole (or very nearly whole) classroom audio. They are a "condenser" type of microphone, known in the audio recording world for their sensitivity.
As a USB microphone, it's very easy to use them - just plug in both ends of the USB cable and select the mic in the audio settings of whatever software you're using.
NOTE: Your computers sometimes decide for you that you'd like to use the headphone jack on the mic rather than the usual sound options (i.e. the speakers built into your laptop or something plugged into the laptop's headphone jack). If you're having trouble hearing audio when you have a Samson mic connected to a laptop, definitely check what audio output (ie speakers) the computer is using. You can do this in Windows 10 by left-clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right of the screen (aka the "system tray") and selecting the desired audio output device from the drop-down menu. Chrome OS works much the same, with the audio info available by clicking the clock area in the taskbar. (If you don't see the speaker icon in those settings options, click the up arrow to make sure you're looking at the full set of icons.
If you'd like to use one, please see your Division Head.
Since lots of people might end up using these microphones, I made this short video walking the viewer through the setup and configuration for use in Zoom, but use in other applications is similar. It's super easy and quick. The secret to success in any application is figuring out how to tell the application exactly what audio inputs and outputs you want to use.
